Breaking the Cycle

May 8, 2016

Recently, one of our 10-year-old girls mentioned that her mother was in foster care to her housemom, Trely. They briefly discussed the reasons of her and her mother being in foster care. Trely asked the girl if when she grows up will her daughter would be in foster care. She responded that she did not want that to happen. They continued to talk about how to prevent that and that she does not have to be defined by her past. The girl stated that she will be wealthy to keep her children out of foster care. Trely replied, “Honey, it’s not about being wealthy. You have to make the right choices. And you need to focus on your education.” Although this was not a life changing conversation for this young girl, these conversations are just the small building blocks in a child’s decision to break the cycle of abuse and neglect and not let their past define them.
