Musings and Life Lessons

If my grandma were still alive, she would have celebrated her 100th birthday recently. She passed right before her 99th birthday, but this time of year always makes me think about her.  She was an amazing woman. She was barely five feet tall, but she was a firecracker who raised four boys, worked at the Naval Weapon Station and was also the First Lady of Hanahan while her husband served as the mayor.

She instilled in me several life lessons that I know have helped to shape my life and how I serve. She loved her husband even when things were difficult. She taught, nurtured, loved, and shaped her boys even when they didn’t receive that love well. She loved the Lord fiercely, even when no one else in her family believed the same as she did. Grandma Bonnie shared her love for the Lord with me and she fanned the flames for that love throughout my life. I was then able to share the gospel with the man I now call my husband while we were dating. Watching his passion for the Lord grow, alongside mine, gave Grandma Bonnie so much joy. She was able to watch Adam and I enter ministry together, see him get ordained and hear him preach. Adam was honored to preach the final sermon for Grandma Bonnie’s funeral service.

As I sat in the church that day, I reflected on the legacy she created by not being afraid to share her faith. She was singled out as the only believer in my family for many years, yet she wasn’t afraid or ashamed of her Lord. She served with a mighty love her family, church, neighbors, community and even people she didn’t know. She wasn’t afraid to give blankets to the homeless or to feed an addict.

My prayer is that I can serve our Savior in this same mighty way. I hope that when my children, foster children, extended Calvary children and future grandchildren reflect on the life lessons learned from Laura, that they see someone who wasn’t afraid to live boldly for Christ. My prayer for all believers is that we will be a people of action in His name and create a legacy of loving our community starting in our own backyards. This back yard ministry is the heart of Calvary Home. To love and to care for the children in our homes is serving our Savior in the purest form. Thank you for being a part of our ministry. We ask that when you’re ready to take your next step deeper into caring for the vulnerable, let us help you and walk alongside you.
